What is this in my Royal Oak Briquettes?

So I bought four bags of the Royal Oak briquettes on sale at ACE for $4.99, poured them in my chimney and noticed that the majority of the briquettes have what appears to be wood in them. Never seen this before, anyone have any idea what it is?

Not sure if that is normal or not. I always wondered whether briquettes were formed before charring the wood or after.

Looks like these were made by binding wood bits together then going through the normal low oxygen burn, but didn't get enough heat to coal up properly. My guess is that everything is normal except for the "undercooking" part

They are formed after.

Larry, That's just tiny pieces of oak wood formed into the briqs. If you were to buy a bag of Kingsford Mesquite, and/or Kingsford Hickory you would see the same thing. That's how Kingsford gets the Hick and Mesq in their briqs and touts them as such. I have not used RO briqs for some years now but I do kind of remember seeing some wood in them. But as I said it's been a while since using their briqs.
