Weber remote thermometer issues

My thermometer immediately alarms at 150 degrees as soon as I get my meat into the smoker.
I have brand new batteries and I am getting the proper signal from the base.
Anyone come across this before?
I only have the thermometer a couple of months.
It was working fine my 1st couple of cooks.

Unfortunately sounds like a defective probe to me. Does the transmitter have dual sensors? if so try swapping each one into both connections/channels in the transmitter to trouble shoot.

On the probe - if you have any areas that feel like they are hardened and no longer flexible, that's a clear sign.

Thanks Ray, You were correct, the probe does have a spot that is really hard.
I guess I will need to get a new one.

Happy New Year!

I had the same thing happen with mine, and will not be buying a replacement. I've become more fond of Polder's dual probe unit. Not remote, but monitors both meat temp and cooker temp simultaneously

I bought one from radio shack a couple of years ago. It looked exactly like the weber therm. It quit working on the first smoke. I took it back and got it replaced and that one didn't work correctly out of the box.

I ended up getting the tru-temp unit and haven't looked back since.

Update to correct my comments to Michele - sorry forgot that you have a Weber remote. Don't know that they sell heavy duty probes as an option. My comments to you below were referring to Maverick ET 73. Sorry for the confusion. The comments regarding BBQ GURU eyelets still apply.

<STRIKE>Michele - be sure to order a pair of the heavy duty probes. You won't be sorry. They also have longer leads.</STRIKE> You might also want to consider installing a set of the probe eyelets from BBQ Guru. They allow you to feed the probe into the WSM without having to set the lid on top of the wires. I think this helps too. <STRIKE>When you order the pair of heavy duty probes you can use either interchangeably as food or pit probes and have a higher temp range as well.</STRIKE>

Hey Dan - I hear you, can be frustrating. The Mavericks, as well as other units I believe use cheaper probe wiring and lower temp range probes to keep the price down due to competition. At least Maverick seems to recognize this and give you the option to buy heavy duty probes as an option in their manual.

I started with Poulder non remotes. I am on my second and use this unit for indoors only now. I had the same problem with the probe where it hardened and failed. I also found the Polder to be non resistant to moisture and less resistant to heat (the plastic housing). Could have been limited to my model.

Hey Dan - got my Maverick ET73 from Amazon about $60 including shipping. You can find them on Ebay if you are inclined. Just google online for ET-73 as well. The heavy duty probes are offered in the manual that comes with the unit. I would just use the standard ones until one goes bad then order the upgraded ones. Make sure you get the ET-73 if you want it for your smoker. Redi-Chek makes several different models of remote thermometers. This one has programing for one of the probes to set hi and low temp alarms for the smoker and the food. They sell an ET7 that is just a dual food remote and works differently.

The probe upgrades are called ET72/73 6' they are $17 each instead of $12 for the standard replacements. They have heavier, longer, high heat wiring and a wider temp range (570 deg) than the standard shorter ones. They give you a break when you buy a pair - $28.

In fact here's the form and contact info if others following this thread would like to order a set:
