Weber Remote Digital thermometer (#6438)

Got a Weber Remote Digital Thermometer model#6438, today 50% off ($17.50) with a coupon from a local hardware chain (Coles Hardware), here in Northeastern Pa.

Seams to only go to 199F, but I think it also goes to 199C, according to the directions.

Also looks like you can't set the desired temp in "Degrees", just doneness levels ie "Rare" "MedRare" etc, and there is a temp associated with the particular doneness level., But you can read the internal temp on the pager, or portion you clip to your belt. etc.

Does anyone have, and use this thermometer if so how do you like it ?

Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Thanks

That's the one I use. For PP I set the Temp/cook setting on Turkey. (180*). It will give you a warning beep 5 degrees lower than your set temp. When it reaches the set temp it will beeb again. When it does, push the the large gray button, this will silence the warning tone. The temp. reading will start to flash above this but will climb to 199*F. For everything else I use the temp options given on the unit.
Hope I didn't confuse you to much.

No you didn't confuse me, thanks for the info.

Does yours have a setting for Celsius ?

I think the directions indicate, there is a celsius setting on it.

Just curious how long have you had yours, and have you used it for high heat 350-375 degree cooks as well ?

Thanks

Yes John, Look in the recievers battery compartment, you'll find the switch there. After rereading your original post, I realized I have a differant model. I have model #32908 so yours might be in a differant location.
You can download a PDF manual online from weber here.

http://www.weber.com/manuals/digital_thermometers.htm

Good luck,

Mac

The box indicates model# 6438, but on the back of the receiver it says model#32908 same as yours.

Thanks for the link to the instructions, much easier to read on the computer, than the actual paper instructions (fine print).

There is a switch for "Celsius" inside the battery compartment, also a "HI"/"Lo" setting for the beeeper.

Looks like we have the same unit.

Maybe when I get to using it if I don't understand something I could ask your advise.

First thing I will do either today or tomorrow is set the probe etc outside where the smoker is and bring the receiver inside the house (Brick), see if I get signal. That will be the first step, next will be to check the calibration etc.

Thanks again

No prob., Hopefully I won't steer you in the wrong direction. Also I should tell you I only use this for meat temp. monitoring and not grill temps.

Mac

Well took the probe and tranmitter outside and receiver in the house just monitored the garage temp, signal went out a couple of times but I turned off the receiver and turned it back on and the temp came right back.

Also checked in boiling water switched to Celsius setting read 99-100 Celsius right on.
Switch to F and ice water read 32 can't get any closer than that. So far so good.

Happy Smoking!!!

This thermometer will read above 199 F if switched to Celsius. I'm not sure how high you can use it. 199 C is about 390 F, hopefully the probe will work that high. Mine only gets used to measure meat temps.

If you read the reviews on Amazon you'll get the impression that it's an unreliable piece of junk. That has not been my experience. The features of the Weber - pre-set temperature alarms, max 199 degree display in Fahrenheit mode, etc. - are annoying, but mine has been reliable for about 2 years, with pretty decent transmitter range. Certainly well worth the price you paid.

John
I have had one for 5 years and the talking one for 2 years I have had to replace the probe once in the older model. I replaced it under warranty no hassles. With the probe and lead, take extra care not to bend or kink the lead where it joins the probe, that's the weak spot. They work great on thicker cuts of meat, however they don't work so good on thin cuts as the refresh rate is about 20 seconds and reaches stabilized temps in about 1 minute or so..

Cheers

Definitly a great price for the weber thermometer with remote. I think I paid around $40 for the one I have. The same one you have listed.

The range on it is pretty good. The only issues I have had is I think if you leave it for like 8 hours it shuts off if you do not touch it. Read the directions to be clear about this. Also occasionally mine has lost the signal and I had to reset it. The first time it happened I thought the batteries were bad so I changed them and it still would not read. I then realize that there is a reset buttom in the battery compartment to reset it. Alls well!

For the most part I like it for monitoring meat temps. However I think the temps for doneness might be a bit high. Like the settings for cooking beef or turkey. I personally think 180* for turkey is to much. Also when cooking beef I ususally cut it short because the meat gains temp when you pull it and continues to cook.

You will have to experiment with it to get a feel for it. As mentioned above the info is very true and thanks for the tip on the 199 C is about 390 F. It says in the directions that...

" The operation temperature range of the sensor probe is -4°F to 482°F (-20°C to
250°C). The LCD display range in 0°C/F to 199°C/F. When the display temperature
is out of range, the display’s digits flash."

Just checked a conversion chart on C* to F* and 390*F = 198.88888*C. With that being said I would think you could use this remote to monitor cooking temps if the sensor probe will take 482*F if using the C* setting and just convert it. I would make sure to not let it touch metal and use a block of wood to support it. Correct me if I am wrong here. You will not hurt my feelings!

Guys Okay

Will be careful with the wire where it connects to the probe as I am with my Taylor wired digital I have been using.

I was wondering about the Celsius setting and possible using it to monitor the WSM temp.
Could be especially helpful on an overnight cook.

How do you guys run you lead out from the lid ?

Under the lid or thru the top vent or what ?

Thanks again for all your inputs.

I run mine through the top vent or through the access door. With my wsm I always have the door upside down or at least that is what they tell me! To me when I got my wsm I felt it made most sense to have the knob down! There is a small gap that is just enough to run cables through. There are other guys that install guru eyelets I belive.

Vince

Just curious, about heat the cable will see going out the access door.

I know heat rises but somehow, I'm just wondering if the cable might get alittle more "Radiant" heat from the charcoal going down toward the access door. Maybe I'm mixed up on that ?

At any rate, do you run the cable out the access door when monitoring something on the top cooking grate ?

Do you ever use your Weber thermometer to monitor the WSM temp as opposed to the meat ?

Thanks

I recently bought mine (it's a tad newer model, but the same operating parameters) and used it for the first time today.

I'd like to echo John's question - If you're running the cord out the access door, is there some danger from the radiant heat that close to the coals?

The thermometer worked like a charm today. Perhaps the best pork chops I've ever cooked!
