I've been using them for a while now and have never had that happen. i do notice a little bit of a smell to them, but not really bad.

I use the cubes. I have never noticed a bad smell. I normally set the chimney in my 22 OTG with the vents all the way open and let it rock.

Do you guys use Crisco as a fire starter? Its cheaper than dirt for a tub of it at walmart. It's the only thing I use. If I'm out in the field and forget it, I use a slice of fat from my meat, wrapped the same way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U7_nn4oReg&feature=youtu.be
