I'm wondering if using hot liquid is a good idea to decrease the time to reach proper temperature.

Yep. It's recommended to add HOT water to the pan...if you use water.

Welcome to forum, John. 
When starting fresh, I use cold water, but I have no objection to hot water either. I do recommend it for replenishing. Wintertime definitely calls for hot water.
