Water pan finish falling off after first use?

I have been coming to this site for years, but finally purchased my own 18.5, and did my first smoke a few days ago. When I was cleaning up afterwards I noticed the finish was coming off of the bottom of the water pan. I followed the Mr. Brown recipe word for word. The pork was the best I've ever had, but I'm assuming the water pan shouldn't be doing this? I didn't have the charcoal piled so high the water pan was resting in it or anything.

That's not the finish coming off, that's just "pit buildup." You'll get that on your sides and your lid too. Just take a paper towel and wipe the flakes off so that they can't get on your food. You're good to go. Nice cook!!! Welcome to the forum

I plan on it. After a successful first run I have been commisioned by one of my friends to cook the half hog he won in a raffle.

yea that's just smoker gunk. you are good. I lot of folks foil their water pan prior to use so you do not have to clean it.
