Walmart/remote thermometer ??

Was in walmart the other day snooping, around the BBQ area, and saw a $16 remote meat thermometer. i think it said BBQ pro or something like that on it.

Just curious if anyone bought one and if so how it works ?

That is all I use. They changed the looks a little this year and raised the price a bit, but it's still the same thermometer. I have three of them, but I've not used the newest one that I purchased a few weeks ago....it's just a back-up.

I use one for the WSM temp and one for the meat, laced through the eyelets. They work perfectly fine, through walls/windows about 50' to my bedroom and office. I've had one of the units for about 4 years and the other for about 2 and they usually read within 2 degrees of each other when I check them for accuracy.

I debated on the ET dual probe for $39 but a friend of mine has one of them and has to replace at least one of the probes per year. I figure for $16 (they used to be $12) if I can get a year or two out of the cheapo I can just pitch it when it quits working.

That's all I've used as well, but I will say they can be inaccurate at times (shelf life?). I am on my third--it used to cost $10, and as I was cleaning my grill this morning from last night's cook the thermometer read 150F--no charcoal remaining in the grill and the air temp was 72F. Go figure!

I'm thinking kinda like you two, for the price, if it lasts a year or 2, chuck it when it quits working.

I bought a grill care thermometer from walmart for the lid of my WSM and it tested, perfectly in the boil as well as ice water test, so I say to myself what else do you want.

You know I bought a polder, wired remote meat thermometer on sale at christmas and I'm afraid to try it in the WSM. It has a wire with rubber/silicon ? insulation as opposed to the metal type outside that walmart remote has.
I'm afraid maybe wrongly that the, insulation on the polder might melt ?
