Wal Mart Meat?

A) The Costco by me doesn't sell packer briskets. (BOO)
B )The flats that they sell are cryovac'd and $2.69/lb.
C) Wal Mart DOES sell packers. (and flats)
D) Wal Mart flat price is $3.33/lb.
E) Wal Mart sells packers for $1.77/lb.
F) It did not appear to be graded meat.

I was like WHOA. Almost a buck less per pound, and it is the cut of meat I want? are ya kiddding?

But then I thought "Wait a sec. Check with the experts."

So, Wal Mart Meat: Garbage? Worth it?

In another post I was quoted as saying you get what you pay for. And I don't really want to buy 12# of crud. Even if I can get it for only $15.

Thoughts?

I believe Walmart's packers are about the only meat they have that is NOT enhanced. I have bought a few from Walmart, but mostly I stick to the local butcher/locker as they have graded "choice" and also CAB, where as you noticed Walmarts is not stamped, so it is probably select. I would have to agree with you Scott, you get what you pay for. I'd pay probably 10 dollars more for a choice packer from my butcher over walmarts....JMO

I have been buying packers at Wal Mart for over 6 years now, and never had a bad one yet. I have one in my fridge right now. As mentioned, pretty much everything else is enhanced, ribs, butts, picnic. Wally packers are just fine to use IMO.

I used to buy briskets from walmart, since it was convenient, but after trying to figure out what i was doing wrong, it turned out it was the beef not the cook. They always came out tough and dry, even foiling, changing temps, marinating, etc. Now i get them from a local store and they're much, much better but the ones i get from my regular butcher are fantastic. The only things i will buy at walmart are the pork, in an extreme pinch, beef ribs, and occasionally chicken. I would never waste the money on a walmart brisket again.

get one from wal mart with as nice of marbeling (fat content, SP?) as possible and you should be happy. I agree with Bryan. i've gotten them there before as well. My latest thinking is the fat content matters. I don't trim very much myself, gotta have that stuff drippin' down for sauce!

I just picked up a 13.5lbs the other day from WM...$1.69 a pound. Its been a while since purchasing a brisket from WM, but have never had an issues with quality.

What Brandon A said may be the only non enhanced meat they sell. Although I like the Tyson enhanced chicken.

Sam's club is normally cheaper and the butts and ribs are not enhanced. I've had bad (tough) steaks from Sam's. The BBQ cuts are fine and I've bought up to $8,500 worth at a time from Sam's.
