vent settings?

I am going to use my 22WSM for the first time without the stoker this weekend. I had to send my stoker in for repair and I won't have it back until early next week. Can someone tell me how they have been setting their vents both for start up and after its up to temp. Also how much lit charcoal are you adding to the full ring for an overnight? I am sure it will be different than my setup with the stoker.

You doing Minion Method Ryan? Start with the top vent open 100% as well as the bottoms if it's not windy. If it is, I'd do 50% on all vents. However you have it if you see the temp rising quick, adjust accordingly.

Are you asking if you should add more to the charcoal to the ring that you have already made full? I don't think you need to but if anything (if it makes you more comfortable) add another layer but not too much that it will overflow.

Ryan,

I pack 23 lbs of blue bag K in the ring. I fit this in there by adding a litte bit, and packing it down, adding some more, and packing and so on.

I usually start with 1/2 chimney of lit. If I am putting a lot of meat on, then I will use more. My last 100# cook I did a whole chimney of lit.

I put the meat on the smoker as I dump the lit. All 3 bottoms vents at 100% open. If the cooker isn't full, I cut them by half once I get within 20-30 degrees of target temp range. If it is full with a lot of meat, I wait till I am at target temp then cut 1 vent by half and see where it goes from there.

No water in the pan.

Yes I am doing minion method. I will fill the charcoal ring with unlit charcoal and I was asking how much lit charcoal everyone is using. I only use about 1/4 of a chimney when I am using my stoker, but it sounds like I will need more. I will start with all vents open and start closing them to 50% as I get closer to my target.

Got it Ryan. Depending on what your cooking (how much you're cooking), start with at least half the starter.
