Using a Maverick on a WSM

I am a brand new WSM 22 owner, and I am wondering if anyone has any tips for rigging up the Maverick RediChek (ET-73) on the WSM.

I am worried about running the probe lead wires out under the dome. The WSM 22 dome is significantly heavier than a One-Touch lid and seems to be more of a "knife-edge", rather then the "rolled over" fit of the One-Touch. This makes me worried that the lead wires will be damaged. Has anyone tried running the wires out of the side access door? Will that cause excessive leakage?

Also, I am concerned about not "toasting" the transmitter. There doesn't seem to be a good place to hang it anyway. Has anyone come up with a nifty solution?

I searched for "Maverick" in the forum posts and saw lots of discussion about the thermometers, but no usage hints. Any useful suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Rogers

I use the hollow eyelets that replace the screws on the grate supports from bbq-guru. Work great.

I hang my transmitter from the lip of the middle section. The lid kind of wedges it (the metal part in the small space between the lid and the middle section) out so that the plastic parts doesn't touch the WSM. Never had any issues...yet.

Welcome to the board!!

Several methods for running the probes - through the top vent, through eyelets, or, my cheapo way, just removed one of the top bolts holding a brace.

For mounting the ET73, get a block of wood, about 2"x2" and 1" thick. Mount the ET73 clip-on holder to one side. Mount flat magnets with hole in the middle to the other side. Attach block of wood to side of WSM.

Jim;
Like you, I was against running thin probe leads under the WSM lid. One option is to run them under the access door, but I was not crazy about that idea either. In thru the vent hole in the the lid is ok unless you need to open the lid to check or spritz.
As Don suggests, eyelets from Guru make a neat clean job of running probe wires. I also use a temp controller on my WSM (Guru also) and one eyelet will allow two probe leads to pass thru it. The eyelets come in sets of two so you can replace the upper and lower water pan and grate support bolt on one support, or do as I did and replace the upper bolt (or lower) on two different supports. I run both pit leads in one eyelet, and both food leads in the other.
I am skeptical of hanging electronics devices directly on the WSM, so I pull a work table up close and lay a beach towel over the table. Since I am also using a Guru, I like to keep these devices off the metal grill surface. It makes a neater work place too, and have my Thermapen and other accessories, insulated gloves, etc right there where I need them.

Jim, I run my extra long probes thru the top grate holes. Bought the xtra long probs from maverick. I lay my transmitter on a shelf of small table that I positition in back of the smoker. Doubles as a hood holder.

Hey MK....don't know which is smoking more, the WSM or your pipe. But no matter...you certainly look RELAXED. So what's your new motto...."smokin' and jokin'" or "chillin' and grillin'"? No matter your choice....it looks FUN to me!!

It was all a photo thing. The cold beverage was on the railing, but the light was just right for the shot.

"Thin blue smoke" It's all an optical illution.

Definitely don't run the wire under the lid. I did that and shorted my brand new Maverick wire. I haven't got around to sending it in for a replacement. Maverick says they replace shorted probes for free.

Greg, where I work, in a Hospital, over the loud speaker for all to hear they say, "STOKE ALERT, STROKE ALERT, STROKE ALERT!!!!!" Then a team goes running to assist the victim. Should we send a team to your rescue? I also hear that chewing gum after being chewed will seal up holes about that size. Bazooka Bubble gum should work well.

Mark,

It didn't bother me at all to drill a small hole in it. I've never been much on fancy gadgetry, like store bought eyes etc, when a hole works just as well and you can put it where you want it. I've often thought if a hardware store sold a box of assorted sized holes they could make a fortune. Speaking of fancy gadgetry, I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy one of those DigiQ DX things. In some ways I really want one but then it just doesn't seem right for a little box and a fan to get part of the credit for the cooking. I'm really having a hard time with the thought of setting up my WSM and maybe having to say to someone "hey, could you plug me in over there"...it just doesn't seem right.

I'm using my ET73 for the first time right now and it's monitoring about 30 degrees hotter than my built in weber therm. Fantastic...

My weber dome therm was always about 30' off. The ET73 is great.

BTW... I've used other grills, a 5 gallon bucket, and just about anything handy to hang my therm. I also just run it under the lid with no worries.

Greg, I agree with you 100 %. My previous comment was a bit tongue in cheek, and just tryin' to inject a bit of humor. If the monitors could be run on nuclear energy without the aid of a plug they might be ok. I would still rather dig a whole in the ground and burn some wood. Unfortunately in this society with overcrowding it aint' practical.

Chimney? I don't know what you are referring to.

I just finished my first smoke last night / today. I set the Maverick transmitter on the table of my OTP. I am very happy with how the WSM did. I'll post some pics in a separate thread soon.

Spelling is not one of my strong points; I hang my Maverick Transmitter on the side of that Weber round aluminum thing that you put Charcoal in order to start your fire.
