Uniflasy vs Quilimetal or Honsgo SS rod grates

The uniflasy grates a half the price of the Honsgo and Quilimetal grates however there are two big short comings I find on the Uniflasy grates. The first is one that I already knew about and that is that there are only 13 vertical rods per grate vs 16 on the Honsgo and Qulimental. This leads to wider gaps between the rods which most people find undesirable for a number of reasons. But, I just realized another discrepency between the two and one that explains the other problem I had with the Uniflasy grates. That is they uniflasy grates are 1/4" less in vertical length than the Honsgo. I always knew they seemed very loose, almost to the point of falling off the cook box ledges on some cook boxes. But, I thought it was probably just due to less of QC with getting the grates square and maybe had to do with the less rods making them less stable. The Honsgo are even bigger than the Quilimetal.

Why they are shorter doesn't really make sense. The savings in material is probably about 25 cents per grate.

I will be going with Honsgo from now on. I hate that grate slop I used to see on the Uniflasy and it isn't worth the savings in price either.

Quilimetal: 17.3 x 11.8
Honsgo: 17.5" x 11.9"
Uniflasy: 17.25" X 11.75"

Bruce,

That's some good info. Maybe sometime you could post some close-ups of the Hongso including the edges of the rods. I really like that Qlimetal actually takes the time to round the corners.

Unfortunately I don't believe Hongso rounds the corners on the rods for their grates (at least they're not rounded on the set I purchased recently).

Jon, as luck would have it, I have one set left of the three I purchased last month. It does seem they did some rudimentary cleaning up on the ends of the rods, but nothing fancy. Running my hand across the row of ends, I don't feel anything sharp. At least nothing that I would be worried about cutting my skin. That being said, I still prefer the more snug fit to the more cosmetic rounded ends. Customers are going to notice grates sliding all over the place when they clean them before they will notice if there is a nice bevel on the rod ends.

Have you found that the Qlimetal ones also don't fit well? I knew that about the cheaper Uniflasys ones, but I haven't tried installing a set of Qlimetal grates yet.

Jon, I have found the Quilimetal to fit much better than the Uniflasy. However, the Honsgo that I just put in my last grill was very well fitting with little movement on the grates. I would say better than the Quilimental grates. I wish the Honsgo were still $49.99. I would buy 5 sets.

I wish you get a reasonably priced set of stainless grates for the Silver A (15" deep). They seem to cost more than the larger ones for the three burner Genesis. I hope I can salvage the cast iron ones from my free pickup. No way to make much profit on a smaller grill with grates pushing $70. Hongso does make a more reasonably priced cast iron set. I guess that will have to be my fallback. If I was doing the grill for myself, I would seriously consider GrillGrates (regularly $100) but wait for one of their sales. They would be a good match for a 2-burner helping to even out the heat better than regular grates. NOT for flipping of course and not on my radar. I will trust my grinder to save the day:D!

Thanks, Bruce! I saved that on my Amazon list in case. It is probably the best backup plan. I think most people would put more value on a grill with new cast iron than new stamped steel. Even non-knowledgeable people tend to see those as out of date.
