Here is my response from an earlier post on the same subject.

I had the same problem with 'cold' Kingsford last year and sent them an EMail via their web site. They mailed me 2 cupons for 2 free 20lbs bags. Howz at!!!

Living in the deep South I appreciate "fresh" charcoal. I tried Home Depot. Poor results. Hard to start. I now buy only from Publix. More expensive, always "fresh". Charcoal is a mostiure magnet. It is used to absorb moistue. I buy only the 20 lb bags. 20 lb bags have a quick shelf life.ie,, they are sold within a matter of hours. I store them within a conditioned space. Max humidity is 15-35%. Why skimp on the fuel? Perhaps we need a "born on date" aaand the relative humidity levels of their orgin.

After a few bouts with damp charcoal similar to what's been described in this thread, I purchased a plastic garbage can from a local hardware store and started storing my charcoal in that. The 32 gallon size easily holds 2 - 24lbs. bags and at $10 it's a worthwhile investment.

After many sessions of having to add second (and third) sets of newspaper I gave up. I could never predict when the coals would catch on the first try so I could stay on my planned schedule, so (I'm embarassed to admit) I broke down and bought an inexpensive electric starter and a small pan to hold the 15-20 briquettes. Works every time!
