I've been having a difficult time finding good cuts of meat (mainly pork) here in PA. Super Wal*Mart had a good selection, but every single cut was 'enhanced' with their 12% pure-profit solution, which I'm trying to avoid. Even our farmers markets have a lousy selection of pork cuts. Right now I have to search through 4 or 5 different grocery stores to get ribs, shoulder roast, and the like. Am I missing something or am I just not driving far enough? Any advice? Anyone else from PA having the same problems? And why do baby-back ribs cost more than new york strip steaks here?

Mike...The Super Walmarts here in Wyoming have frozen Spare ribs that are not enhanced. I have tried them and they are not bad. Ask the clerk where to find them.
Also Walmarts out here are beginning to carry some pork butts that are not enhanced and now they have USDA Choice Briskets at 98 cents a pound.
Other than that we buy all our meat at Costco or Sams Club. Hope this helps.

Mike, I'm getting USDA Choice briskets at Wal-Mart in York that are not enhanced for .98 lb. Other than that you can go to Costco they have a HUGE meat section and try BJ'S Wharehouse. The briskets at BJ'S are $1.99 lb her in Lancaster. And
$3.69 lb at Giant Grocery Stores OUCH!

Mike, do what I was forced to do, Find a good butcher shop,(it may be in a grocery store) but an old fashioned Butcher is better. Slip the head butcher a $20, and find out where he buys his pork from. If he wont arrange for good meat,(spec. order) You may be able to buy direct.
When I was in Memphis, I could buy Whole Shoulders all day long, at any grocery store for $1.19 a lb., or less, but in Florida all I could
find is skinless, picnic shoulders, and Boston Butts. So I worked my local butcher, and now I get 20lb+ whole shoulders, skin on,for around $1.30lb.When you cook a big chunk of meat like that, you want the skin on, to protect the meat from burning, and drying out, and when that fatty skin starts seperating from the meat, its just about ready to pull off the bone! My favorite supplier in Memphis was "The Butcher Mart" on Knight Arnold Rd. I will try to get the address, and fwd. to you, It may cost alittle more, but it can Fed/Ex out to you in 24 hours, on dry ice.

Thanks for the tips. It looks like I'll probably be getting a membership at BJ's or maybe Sams. I'll have to check them both out. Plus I've never even considered mail order. That would be worth a try also.
