Transporting WSMs to comps.

I was thinking that the best way to transport in my budget would be to use a cargo carrier to transport the WSMs. Does anyone have experience with this?? Whats the best way to tie them down?? I would think the best way would be to find a large garbage cans that a 22 WSM would fit in then strap that down somehow. If anyone has pics that would help as well.
 
What kind of vehicle do you use to transport them in? I have a Dodge Pick up and what I do is place the center section with grates and pan, with the lid on, all the way forward in the bed of the truck; I then take a very long bungee chord and hook it under the bottom lip of the center section and bring it up under the lid handle then down the other side and hook it on the bottom of the center section on the opposite side. I then place the cover on and take another long bungee chord and wrap it around the center section securing the cover. The bottom section just sits in the bed next to it. I usually place place my long extension chord inside the chimney starter and place that on the fire grate. Haven't lost anything in 5 years.
 
I have a jeep charokee but I plan to pack the inside with everything else I need for a Comp, so the Cargo Hauler would transport the smokers. Im not sure if securing the smokers to that is safe. I wouldnt want to bend the cookers by strapping the heck out of them.
 
If you can't fit it inside your Jeep, if you've got a hitch you can get one of those hitch haulers instead of a trailer. You might have to bungee them real good, use some kind of duct tape to keep them together or use a cargo net over it to keep them from falling off if you have bumpy ride. You could look into renting one of those small UHaul trailers if you don't want to own a trailer/hitch hauler outright. Like BB above I've got a truck w/ an 8ft bed that I bought for putting my contest stuff in for transport.

Great tips with those bungees
 
I just threw mine in the back of my buddy's truck, but I've seen people that wrap the entire assembled WSM tightly in plastic wrap to keep everything together and then secure it to a hitch hauler or trailer.

I do about the same thing that Bruce does, except I bungee the WSM assembled from one leg, over the lid through the handle and down to a different leg with two bungee cords. Then, I cover the WSM and use a long bungee to secure it to the tiedown hooks in the bed of my truck. Works like a champ.

I don't have a truck or a trailer so I put a tarp down in my 4runner, and lift the top & middle sections off the base inside the cover. This goes upside down propped, and the base/charcoal ring/grates/drip pan get stacked standing up by themselves.
