Thanks Brad,I really didn't know how much charcoal to use and I ended up covering the whole grate with one layer.I'll try your suggestion,see where that would be effective as my cook went pretty fast.Probably had enough coal to do burgers or steaks because that thing stayed hot for awhile ! Oh, and I flipped the side vents back to original position.
 
Nice find! The wood handles are worth more than you paid for the grill. I'd like to add one of these to my small Weber collection.
 
the only thing left to do is replace the little washers were the legs go into the body. use ss washers as the originals will rust. also make sure the smooth side of the washer is against the vent so it doesn't get scratched. great score.
