Hey Chris,
Unless I missed it(which is entirely possible) did you use a 4in or a 6in stem on the thermometer that you installed on the WSM. I bought a 6in think it will be ok. Also this an awesome site with a lot of great people. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I bought Trend model 33 thermometers with 4" stems for both of my WSM's. I didn't want to take a chance of having the 6" stems touching the meat and giving false readings. Probably the only time that might happen is when smoking a Turkey or a large Pork Butt or Beef Rib Roast that stands up kind of high into the lid area.

When I drilled my own WSM, I installed the Trend Model 33 with a 4" stem. I also did the same thing on The Little Red Bullet project.

Before doing the permanent mounting, I used a Model 33 with a 6" stem that I inserted through the lid vent. I decided to go with the 4" to make sure I didn't hit any meat on the top grate.

Regards,
Chris

P.S. Thanks for the kind words about the site!

Thanks Chris and Rocky for the info. I've used the 6 in.thermometer a few times and have not had any trouble but i could see the problem with turkeys and large roasts etc. which I haven't tried yet but we got the nice weather coming so I better get the model 33 4in. ordered. thanks again and keep on cookin!!
