Thermometer question

I just bought a Maverick RT 73 redi check smoker thermometer. I am smoking some meat today. My question is which way would be a better: snake the probe lines through the top vent or run them under the lid and just set the lid on top of the probe lines. Thanks!

Under the lid is easier, but you run the risk (probably slight) of compressing the wire (bad). Through the vents is better, but you have to plan for what to do when you remove the lid (pull the plug at the thermo).

Best solution, put in a grommet of some sort (I like the 3/8" lamp rod with a cover).

Thanks. I will get the grommet thing soon but I just bought this thing last night and want to try it out today.

Me. I just run the food probe under the lid, smoker probe placed into the top vent.
Never had any problems doing that in over 3 yrs.
Good luck!

I saw a post here where a member removed one of the top bolts that fastens to the top grate, and snakes the probes in the open hole, I tried it and their still seems to be plenty of support for the top grate.

i sometimes run mine under the lid, but where the wire contacts the lid i wrap wi some foil just to be safe.

Hey John, I just installed this on my WSM last night.

BBQ Guru Eyelet

It's the same concept of removing the top bolt like Jeffery said, but this looks neater and offers that extra support. It's super easy to install...no drilling required

The best part is both my food probe and pit probe can fit through it at the same time. No more going through the lid vent for me!

Where abouts in SJ are you from? I grew up in Millville if you know where that is, not many people do...

Another vote for the "under the lid".

Sure it will work inserted thru the top vent, but if its to close to the food/sides of the cooker you will get inaccurate readings.

And if run the probes under the lid you dont have to toutch em when you are opening the lid.

"wear and tear" maby...but i always done that and they still works. If they would get damaged over time...Its just an great excuse to get the new ET

I cant get the grommets here in sweden, and i dont wanna drill in my unit. Take one grate bolt out will work for sure...But then again..bla..bla..bla.

Under the lid is fine for now.

Food probe under the lid. Smoker probe dropped through the lid vent just about to where the wire starts. I've had no issues, and I like the convenience of doing it this way.

I'll add another vote for the BBQ Guru Eyelet. Quick and easy to install. Or make your own as shown here. I'll do the under the lid sometimes but I prefer not to.

Either works fine.I have an eyelet in place...I don't bother with it anymore...just go under the lid...no ill effect after years of use.
