Mrs. TVWB and I visited Terry Black's Barbecue in Fort Worth when passing through the area in November 2025. It's part of the Black family's barbecue feud, as some describe it. You can watch the documentary "Family Beef" to learn more.
We visited the original Black's Barbecue in Lockhart in 2015 and it's fair to say that Terry Black's Barbecue is nothing like it, both in the cooking method used or the physical space, a modern building made to look old-school. It's one of six locations--five in Texas and one in Nashville. What is similar to the original Black's is that you wind through a line ordering your sides and dessert first, then land at the cutting station for your meats and payment. I liked the atmosphere, there was a big indoor multi-level dining space and a really nice outdoor dining patio, with the pit room open to the patio. If you walked up to the pit room, they invited you in and opened up a pit to let you take photos of the perfect looking briskets inside. It's not ideal to open a pit a bunch of times, perhaps those were stunt briskets.
It wasn't too busy on the day we were there, and we weren't interested in sides or desserts, so we made a beeline to the cutting station. We both ordered brisket sandwiches, we shared a couple of spareribs, and I got some turkey. Funny story: The cutter made my sandwich first using half lean/half fatty brisket and it was a thing of beauty. Then he made Mrs. TVWB's sandwich using a bunch of lean brisket and it was not as impressive. She spoke up and said, "I want mine the way you made his!" and he obliged. It pays to ask for what you want!
We both agreed that the brisket was very good but not as flavorful as other examples of Texas brisket we've tried like at Franklin's or Cattleack. I think it could have used more pepper. The ribs were probably our favorite bite. The turkey was very good, too. Three sauces were served at the table--original, spicy, and sweet--and we both agreed that none of them did much for the meats. I guess the original was my favorite of the three.
After finishing up at Terry Black's Barbecue, Mrs. TVWB suggested out of the blue that we should try Panther City BBQ just a few block away. Why yes, dear, that sounds like a great idea!
Here are some photos from Terry Black's.
