Temperature variations digital vs dome temperature

Hello all,
I have a question regarding temperatures. I have been using a digital temp probe which I insert thru the top vent. The dome temp reads lower than the digital probe which is hanging near the grates. I would think that the dome should be a higher temp since heat rises. Anyone one out there doing the same thing and seeing the same results. Any input would be great.
Thanks,
Pat

The thermometer in the dome is not known for being precise so it is not a surprise that they do not agree. I generally do all of my smoking at about 230. At that temp the needle on my gauge is pointing straight up Osiris easy to check the temp. Remember that smoking does not require precise temps and times, just find out what works for you and your smoker and enjoy.

Pat, the dome gauge is convenient and can be accurate (at least for a while). However, that doesn't mean it's as good a place to measure temp as the vent or the grate since it's more affected by coolness of meat or direct sunlight.

Nowadays I measure temp with my probe just below the top grate, but avoid drippings by not hanging directly under the meat. I can't center the grate if cooking briskets or ribs, but as long as the probe tip hangs over the pan it still seems to be a very accurate way to measure the actual cooking temp, at least if using water in the pan. I probably would've stuck with measuring at the vent if I cooked dry.
