Temperature difference

All,

I have a new 18" WSM. I stuck my Taylor 5911N thermometer into the lid port to double check the temperature of the lid thermometer on the WSM and they are about 20-30 degrees off. Anyone had this happen before and did you find which was correct?

Yes. Whichever one reads about 212 degrees F in boiling water is the one to trust.

Not really pertinent to your queastion

, but the gauge should read LOWER than the grate temps, and the vent temp is HIGHER, or at least higher than the center of the grates. Just how much depends on the wind, ambient temps, sun exposure, IT meat temp, etc.

I prefer to hang the probe of my ET-73 in the vent, remembering that the actual average cooking temp is 15 or so degrees less, as Chris A. reports on his site here. Subsequently, 225-250, or 250 at the vent is a common target temp for low-n-slow if you temp there. The grate is so small that most folks don't measure temp there.

Bingo! Also if you have meat close to your probe your not getting accurate readings. Pick dome or vent temp and adjust to your likings. Less than 300ish and your bbq'n.

Back to your question, Jason, the OE therm is NOT to be considered accurate, or reliable.
There are reports on the board here of both inaccuracy and fluctuations with the lid therm supplied on the 2009 and following models.

If his OE gauge reads 20-30 degrees less than his probe in the vent, that's pretty close to what myself and others have reported...so it's close enough for bbq, assuming his digital therm is accurate, of course. Not saying it's a great gauge, but it's working for a lot of folks, despite negative reviews.

I took this to mean that he compared the results of both therms taken thru the OE port in the lid of his !8.5 WSM. Hence my comment about the inaccuracy of the OE therm as reported in many entries on this board. My intent was to point this apparent fact out to Jason.
Thanks.

I guess that was a second cup of coffee morning and I never got a second cup. If you change where he said "lid port" to "lid vent", you might get an idea why I wrote what I wrote in my first reply.

After all, THAT queastion has been posed many a time....but it doesn't change the fact that I was in left field from misreading a word.

No, Mike, to be honest, I'm not too fond of the OE gauge, either. As matter of fact, I had Weber send me another one, but it's about 15 degrees off. (My first one was w/in five, but not anymore.) Anyway, my point was that the gauges are fine "until proven guilty", but it sounds like the poster's is guilty as sin, huh? Funny that lots of folks seem to be happy w/ 'em, but I'll be at a loss when my ET-73 gives out.

Thanks for pointing out my misunderstanding.

Jason, I misunderstood what you said in your queastion, but if your OE gauge fails the boiling water test by much, I'd get Weber to send you a new one.
