Tell me about this six burner Summit Platinum

I wheeled this grill from two houses down yesterday. I can't find a serial number and I don't know much about these newer grills.
I see it's a Summit Platinum from the badge on the lid. What years did they make these grills?
I understand that these are rust buckets and replacement fireboxes are no longer available.
Can you tell from the photos how bad the rust is on this grill?
When I got it I was just thinking about grabbing it for parts for anyone on this forum, but now I'm thinking about saving it.
Do you think it's a good idea to save this one?

I can take more detailed pics if needed.

I know the ears for holding the lid pins are broken off of the casting, and it needs flavorizer bars.

Thanks
Gerry

Yikes! For that $$$ you could buy a new 4 burner Genesis. I guess it's all in how one interprets "value". I guess for free and then you put maybe $1300-1500 in it. Well you got yourself a lot of grill for that coin
I'm not saying anyone should actually buy one, just that you can. One of the things I always see people say is that they can't get a new cook box for an old Summit. In some cases that's true, like a first generation Summit for example. It only took about a minute to determine that you could get one for this particular grill.

It looks like flavorizer bars would be about $360.
No wonder the grill was out at the end of the driveway!

I wonder if someone actually ordered that cookbox if the order would truly populate and ship or a notice would come back "sorry out of stock"?

I have a place in my heart for those Platinum 2nd generation Summits. Some weak points, but a real 304 stainless frame and cabinetry. The broken castings are what would give me the greatest concern. No way are you going to be able to fix that, I would think. I also doubt a new replacement can be had for any price. Your best hope would be to patiently troll FBM ads and hope to find another one at a realistic price - they are out there. Then combine parts and minimize what you need to buy. The flavorizer bar deal linked above looks really good to me!

As noted earlier though, the 2 side panels off the lid and fire box should be the same as those on my bro's Summit Silver. IDK what he thinks he wants for it, (though unlike most Summits his is solid) and carries Dave Santana grates. So, there is some actual value to it I'd think

Well, let's see. The casting is junk, so if one were to drill a couple of holes...IMG_0603.JPG

Then one could run a tap, say perhaps a 10-24 thread through both pieces.

One could then obtain a couple of 10-24 x 2-1/2" screws (stainless, of course) and screw the pieces together with some JB Weld in the joint and on the screw threads.

Don't forget to fill in the recess in the casting. We don't want to cheap out now...

Now, one can have a beer and watch the epoxy cure. Might take more than one beer though.

Tomorrow when the epoxy cures, the ends of the screws will be cut off and ground flush.

It should hold pretty well. Time will tell.

I picked up a brand new unused Genesis ii with a broken cookbox for $50. I still have to replace the cook box with one I already have sitting in my garage but here is the fix that the guy I bought it from did.

Nothing wrong with this. Hell, why not? If he'd been a little bit more on the craftsmen like side, he could have made it (and Josh I bet you can as well as someone like Jon, Gerry, Cody, Bruce) any of the fine craftsmen on this site look like it was actually manufactured that way

True Larry.
I have an extra cookbox though so I may as well put it to good use.
It actually opens and closes just fine. Just not much to look at.
