Tear test with tongs - not intended for 1/2 racks?

Tried picking up 1/2 racks with tongs yesterday to check for doneness with StL cuts, and they still didn't tear after 6 hours. Pulled them and they were still fine, but very done. Is this test with the tongs intended for a full rack?

Need to use toothpicks maybe...........
 
I'm assuming you mean the bend test which relies on the weight of the full rack to bend and tear the ribs. Try grabbing 2 adjoining ribs and pulling them apart, the meat should tear the meat between the bones. If the meat starts to come off the bones then you have fall off the bone ribs which to me are way overdone. Or use your thermo probe or toothpick.
