Stubbs briquettes

I just got to say I'm a believer now. This past weekend I saw a bag of Stubbs at the store so I decided to try it out on some cross-cut short ribs. Fired up the WSM using the standard method (used about 7 lbs of charcoal, temp was easy to control for about fours-fives hours at 275 in the dome. At the end of the cook I decided to cook some chicken drum sticks that I had in a simple brine, by tossing a hand full of fresh coals on the embers. Cooked the chicken with no water pan. IMO chicken tastes the best on the WSM no water pan on the top grate vents wide open. Once done I shut the cooker down and the next morning still had some usable coals left about a 1/2 bucket. I cannot remember ever having enough embers to cook anything. It reminders me of the BGE that I have.

I've tried lump but the burn times have been hot and fast and not predictable = bad bbq

Kingsford is the standard but lately it have been burning faster that it used to in my cooker.

Bottom Line: Stubbs for me burned even without filling up the charcoal bowl. And its $7.95 for a 15 lbs bad here in Maryland. Going to stock up.

I'm with you Darryl, I stocked up when Lowes had a sale. I use it nearly everyday and couldn't be happier. I think it is worth the regular price and will buy it at that if run out before the next sale.

Glad ya liked 'em, Darryl.

They're so good....it makes me wonder why the other charcoal makers won't put more CHAR in their CHARcoal?!! EVIDENTLY, they could, if they just WOULD.

Just started using Stubbs briquettes on my Performer, and was so impressed I raced off to Lowes to grab extra bags, since they had a special going. On Dave's recommendation, I'm going to use them for my next overnight WSM cook instead of my usual Wicked Good lump. That'll be interesting.

I'm gonna try it this weekend for the first time. I'm looking forward to it. With all the good reviews it gets on this board, I'm actually a little excited.

I am driving out of my way today after work to finally pick up some stubbs at Lowes. Doing an overnight butt cook on Saturday so I can't wait to try it...(is it buy one get one free still?) Even if it's not I am picking some up!

Tom, not sure about where you live, but our local Lowes ended that special, and now it's Buy one get one free Kingsford Blue. BUT they are giving away a free bag of Stubbs wood with each bag of Stubbs briquettes.

Historically I have been a lump user. But I've learned lump is not the best choice when it comes to my WSM. When I first got my WSM I bought four bags of Kingsford blue (Lowes buy one get one free). I noticed an unpleasant taste in the food I cooked. I just burned through the first two bags of Stubbs I've ever bought and must say I am pleased with the product. It burns slow and no undesirable taste in the meat I've been able to detect.

I will continue to use Stubbs as I can't find Royal Oak in my area.
