Stubbs as good as rancher?

i saw the post about lowes and the sale on stubbs. I am not familar with this fuel, just their sause. Is everyone here a big fan of the stubbs charcoal? I did a quick search and only found talk about the "sales" but wonder how it really compares

i just got the two for one deal bags. will be a bit before i can compare. the regular price is a bit much and would steer me away from it.

I got the BOGO offer which made me willing to try it. When you can normally get 40 lbs of KB at 15.87, it's kind of tough paying 8.50 for 15 lbs. So at 4.25 a bag for the Stubbs, I'll give it a whirl.

I think it's about the best natural briquette out there. I Think Wicked Good and Rancher/TJ's are good too. I buy Stubbs when it's on sale, or I buy TJ's 18 pounds for $6.99. I never buy Wicked because it's never on sale and regular price is pretty pricey. I bought some K Comp a while back and am finishing it up now. It burns too fast and smokes to much for me. I think it's mainly made from recycled wood sawdust. I like KB alright when the twins are $10.

That's my two cents!

Let me add a part B to the Stubbs question. I'm on my last bag of Rancher, and I have 2 coupons for the $3.50 Kingsford Comp deal at Costco. So do I get 8 bags of KC, or load up on Stubbs. Or both?

Shaun - you were posting the same time I was. I take it Stubbs is the way to go. Thanks for reading my mind!

Stubbs is great stuff. If you can find it a a great price, go for it! I'm a huge fan of Rancher's, I still have a few left. But ya, I think Stubbs is great charcoal.

Stubbs is great but I will only buy a lot when on sale.

Jon, both. You will use it regardless so always buy bulk when on sale.

I know what you mean, Josh. The problem is that I've been using my Rancher stockpile for so long that I feel like I'm auditioning a replacement.

As always I will be stocking up on Rancher when it goes on sale at OSH at the beginning of the season. The regular price at Trader Joes is always good in my opinion. I use Rancher almost exclusively when going low n slow. Stubbs may be good but I see no reason to change.

Jon, I don't think Stubbs is on sale anymore. If not I would stick with Rancher and look for a sale. I like KB better than comp after several cooks with it. I think KB is a lot more versatile. Comp smokes too much, burns too fast, and smells like recycled plywood. It does hit really high heat for searing though.

Steve, when Rancher goes on sale at OSH what's the price on it? Thanks! BTW, Rancher takes no back seat to Stubb's IMHO.

I've been using nothing but Kingsford regular and, while it's ok, I recently tried a bag of Royal Oak red lump and a bag of Stubbs. To me, both are head and shoulders above the K. I will buy and use Stubbs whenever I can find it on sale. Same for RO, but I haven't seen it on sale. I haven't tried Rancher yet, but will make a trip to Trader Joe's for sure.

For now, Stubbs has my vote for normal smoker use. Just got to wait for a sale.

Shaun - What is the TJ brand, is it all natural? Briquettes or lump? I shop there, but have yet to see it, maybe now that spring has sprung, they'll start carrying it. Is it usually 6.99 for 18lbs.?

Jack, it's Rancher all natural briquettes with a TJ's label on it. At OSH Rancher is usually just under $10 for an #18 bag. But, it's always $6.99 at TJ's. Great stuff too!

Steve -- what's OSH? I just cracked open my last bag from the big HD sale on Rancher 3-4 years ago.

Yeah, looks like I missed the Stubbs sale and don't want the Comp. Guess I'll keep an eye out for another Stubbs deal or start seeking out Wicked Good.

Shaun, If memory serves me OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) had it at the start of last season for around $4.99 a bag. Their regular price is just under $10. I like Trader Joes regular price of $6.99.
Jon, OSH stands for Orchard Supply Hardware. Don't know if you have this store in PA but it all over California.
