Starter problem on Genesis II

New guy here. I’ve owned Weber gas grills for decades along with my WSM smoker. I would appreciate any advice on my newest grill. I recently bought a Weber Genesis II off facebook marketplace…grill was previously restored with new burners and flavorizer bars. It had no spark when I bought it but I replaced the igniter module and it now has good spark on all 3 burners.

My problem: the left side burner doesn’t start consistently. The middle and right burners start immediately, but the left one clicks and sparks with the gas on without igniting. Once it finally lights, with a burst of flame if I’ve left gas on for 15+ seconds, the burner lights evenly. Obviously gas isn’t hitting the spark as it should, but I don’t see any clogs or obvious problems with what is a new burner.

I haven’t taken the burner apart yet. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked to see if the igniter is clipped onto the burner properly? If it has popped loose there might be a bit of distance between the igniter and the burner gas which would take longer to light.

When it does that final burst into flame is it possibly gas built up ignited by one of the other burners. Or are you testing this one with the other burners off?

Hi John, check the wires running from the ignition module in the lower grill to the ignition. Inspect the wires especially where they do a 90’ bend. If they look ok swap wires from the good to the bad to see if it follows the wires

If you know it is sparking, then try adjusting the electrode so it is a little further away from the tube so the gap is slightly bigger. Exact position of the electrode and gap are two big factors is failure to ignite when you know you are getting spark.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will check asap (the grill is at a rental property so I can’t check it immediately). I can check the wires etc but the spark looks the same as the other burners, which makes me think it’s not a wiring issue. It will eventually start, even with other burners off…but it’s after holding the button down with the gas on for multiple seconds…it’s taking a buildup of gas for that burner to light which is not ideal at all.

I will check to make sure the clip is on properly (I’m pretty sure it is), and I’ll try adjusting the electrode.

Intuitively it seems like gas isn’t coming out of the holes below the electrode, since the spark looks the same as the other two. But they are new burners, and once it’s lit it looks fine.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

I have a Genesis II ex335.
I have seen the same issue.
I found that following the lighting instructions in the user manual then I do not experience the issue.
Not sure it’ll help you, but it worked for me.
RTFB (read the flippin book). What a concept!

I don’t have the book. I have tried all orders of lighting the burners to no avail. Is there a particular “trick in the book” I should know about? Thanks
