Stainless Steel Platinum Cook Boxes

I have had probably 9-10 SS Platinum grills cross my driveway. It seems to a common thing for them to be warped in several different places. More common than with a regular Genesis Silver B cook box. I think they are technically different cook boxes physically, but they are fully interchangeable. I can't imagine that Weber would have made them thinner than a regular silver B cook box, but the front, and sides seem to be much more prone to warping and bowing out than the Silver B.

Know there are not a lot of people that have acquired more than one or two of them through the years, but am I just having a run of bad luck with them or no?

I had 6 Genesis Platinum C’s. 5 had manifold fires that destroyed the control panel. All had major issues - warped fireboxes, rotten lid liners, rotten cabinets, etc.

Granted most were free and the owner was done with them.

It would be interesting if you examined both side by side to see if you can detect any actual difference between a Platinum and Silver B/C cook box. It could just be previous owner abuse though and you're just getting unlucky.

I am still using the Genesis 1000 that I fixed the bowed out cook box on. I think it's going on three years now and it's still fine. It might be worth a shot rather than throwing them out for the scrappers.

The two in my driveway right now both have the bowed front but they also have other areas where the cook box is bowed out. They both seem to be working fine with no problems with the lid closing, but they are beyond what I would consider good enough for a rehab grill.

I have not tried a set of grates in them to see just how bad the front bowing is, but it is clearly noticeable just looking at it.

My daily driver SS Platinum from years ago endured a small Chernobyl event in the hands of the prior owner. I can't say if there is some reason in common for the warping and meltdowns you and others have seen. I did a quick check and found that unlike in the earlier Platinum models, the SS Platinums have the same 36,000 btu output as the Silver and Gold grills of the that era. So, there is no obvious explanation for them running hotter. Could be bad luck or maybe the better off people who bought the Platinum models were actually worse at taking care of their grills!

Grease fires. Makes every one of those bow over time. I speak from expert experience.

Bruce, my SS Platinum cookbox is in great condition, the front is straight as a arrow.

Bruce, I just remembered, I have a different cookbox in my stainless steel frame Platinum, it's the 13 flavorizer bar cookbox.

One theory - regular iron framed grills may have rotted out before they got the opportunity to have a thermal event.
