stainless steel or porcelain coated cast iron

Hey all,

I currently have a Genesis Silver with the porcelain coated cast iron grates. Since they are going on 5 years old, they are showing some signs of wear (rust). Planning on replacing this season.

What are your opinions on those type of grates vs. stainless steel? Should I stick with new versions of what I have, or switch it up.

Thanks guys!

I personally like plain cast iron with no coating. I don't know if your grill manf. has one though. The exposed cast iron seasons really well, kind of like your grandmother skillet.

Mike , porcelain coated grates, flavorizer bars etc. ,develop micro cracks in coating because of differential expansion of the metal & the coating @ high heat. These cracks lead to rusting. I wouldn't buy new grates , clean them like you would a rusted cast iron pan , season them & care for them as cast iron grates.

John,

Thanks for the info. I will probably try that route before I go fork out the money for new ones. Much appreciated!
