SS Platinum: U/I part

I started my SS Platinum project today and as I took it apart, I noticed this part that I didn't expect. Can anyone tell me what it is and what is for. I have never seen this on a Gold or Silver series.

The part extends out from the back of the tank mount panel into the cabinet and under the cook box area. It is highlighted in yellow. I have never seen anything like this and have no idea what it's function might be.

Thoughts???

Mine has it, too. It’s good for rusting out. My understanding is that it provides heat protection.

I wonder why they didn't put that on all of their Genesis grills back then

Could it be because it has a closed in cart and the heat does not dissipate so it gets hotter?

Cold be. But I havent seen them in any other closed cart grills. My grill is going open cart any way.

If you are doing an open cart you could just ditch that part I suppose.

I have seen these on a few. I think they are meant for hight restriction so can’t put stuff in the cabinet which would get too close to the firebox from underneath. They are mostly badly rusted.
