What do you do to fill this tank? If you can't get it filled what are you guys doing? Is there a fitting I can retro fit to use the current propane tanks like on the new performer? What is the SS Performer community doing?

Brian

Brian, I have been researching this myself for my own performer project. I think the option you had in mind is to replace the valve on the tank with the current version and get it recertified. From here you would need a hookup, hose and NPT fitting to go onto the existing regulator, or replace the regulator as well. It's pretty simple but you will need to piece the parts together at a hardware store.

Alternatively you can use a regulator from a Q which has the valve built into it, but this way it would only accomodate the disposable propane bottles. You would also need to fabricate a bracker to hold the regulator in place.

I think you can also put this on the existing regulator to interface with the newer style LPG hookups.

I believe this is called an ACME fitting.

I am in the same boat. Mine works fine, but I want to change it to a small green propane tank. I'm not really into going someplace to get my original one filled.

The newer performer uses this part: its basically a regulator with a built in valve that sticks out of the frame:

It's 47 dollars here:

A $12 regulator from a GA or Q will also work as the valve is built into the regulator with the disposable tank fitting. The NPT fitting on the other side of the SHOULD fit the existing hose on our performers but I can't confirm this at the moment.

The difference between the two is the location on the knob, one is perpendicular to the regulator disc, and the other is coaxial with the disc.

To me, it looks like the GA regulator can be mounted in the SS perfomer where the hole is for the current propane tank valve. You would need to make a bracket to hold it in place. I am not sure if it has mounting threads on the bottom like the performer regulator. Perhaps a quick trip to ACE or Home Depot to check is in order.

Shaun, if your tank is in good shape let me know when you are done with it and I may be interested in picking it up from you. I was going to hook up a 20lb tank to my performer soon but would prefer the small tank.

I would like to do this to the SS performer I have,I have the tank and all but would like to mod to the green tanks also I like this version, makes good use of the space I think i would add a stoage area for a spare tank, I need a replacement lid. It is a red bowl, so that makes it hard to find, unless I do a repaint of one. Oh well I am not in a hurry that is the good part.

Lawrence,

Thanks for the research you did. I was planning on making a bracket like the one pictured above, but wasn't sure how I was going to make it look. Now I know.

Yes, I am interested in making a trade since I won't need my large tank anymore. Just contact me. Thanks again,

Shaun

how old is the grill?

mine is a 94 and I'm still able to get the tank refilled (local uhaul store refills propane)

i had to replace a regulator, found one at menards for 17 bucks thanks to Jeff K

I wouldn't convert it to the camp tanks, the bigger tank will hold a lot more, last a lot longer, and it's a lot cheaper.

There is always an issue with the tank, or they are to busy doing something else and it's a bother to them. I would rather pay double the cost than to deal with them. besides the drive across town costs me more on gas than the tank will cost to fill. Aside from all of that, I don't even need one. I just thought I would do what I consider an upgrade. I have a weed burner that works way better than the gas assist does.

I wonder if this would work.

Shaun, it looks like that one uses a cast clip to connect to a hose or pipe. You may be better off with the Weber GA one that has an NPT fitting instead. This fitting may be interchangable with your existing hose.

that sucks. the guys here are friendly and don't give a frack. And it's just 3 minutes away.

that regulator looks like it work, although i don't know if i'd feel comfortable with the little tank that close to the bowl.

Thanks Troy,

I think it would actually be further away. I'm not positive though. It might depend on how I mount it.

There's a Ferrellgas about a mile from me. I took my 5 lb tank there and they filled it without any problems. Presonally, I like the 5 lb'ers. I think it's one of the things that make the SS performers so unique (well, aside from the SS table). From what I've read, I won't need to refill it often.

Shaun,

Upon further research you can use this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heate...ef=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_0

to screw the disposable tank to the existing regulator. The inlet to the regulator is 1/4" NPT. You can then use the valve past the regulator (my Performer has one) to turn the gas on and off. This way the tank is far away from the kettle. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Thanks again Lawrence, I might give that one a try.

Good point Forrest.
