Source for quality apple wood?

I really like the wood chunks I have gotten from smokinlicious.com. They are rather uniformly cut and there is zero bark on the wood. Unfortunately, they do not sell apple.

I have found a few internet sources for apple wood chunks, but the best I can tell they are not nearly as "clean" as the wood from smokinlicious. Anyone know where I could find some?

This brings up a second question as well. Does the bark really make that much difference? I have read on this board several times that many people think that the bark gives off "bad" smoke. Any thoughts on this?

I personaly have not found a huge difference between pieces with bark and without out. Some say they have though. Smokinlicious does have excellent quality but sometimes it is nice to have some larger and smaller pieces depending on what your doing.

Smokinlicious does not have apple chunks but they do sell apple woodscuits and apple dust.I have used both and been happy with the finished product. As for bark or not I prefer none, the center of the tree is the way to go,it is the sweetest wood because the sugars are concentrtaed there, just my 2 cents.

Among many, Cabela's sells apple. You might want to try to Google "apple chunks" for other alternatives

I'll repeat from my response from Clarks wood dust post. I have used apple and pecan from this source:

I thought the quality was pretty good.

Some chunks have bark, though if you're a purist. I'm not when it comes to bark, but 95% of the time I do remove it from the chunks that have it.

This site seems to have the best combo of cost & shipping. I'll probably give it a try.

Thanks for the all the info everyone.

Hey Lee - Charcoalstore looks good too in terms of variety. Might give them a shot when I'm looking for some cherry or alder. Plus I like the option for bark/no bark on some of the woods.

Tony C,

Smokinlicious.com doesn't have apple. That's what started my whole dilemma.

I have emailed back and forth with them (they seem very nice) and they don't ever have apple because they are too picky about their porducts. They only harvest and sell "clean" trees. Per their research, all of the apple orchards in their area spray their trees with pesticides, etc. They don't want to sell that wood.

I've never been one to be too "all natural", but this does seem like a good idea to me. Maybe that's why all their other products are so good.

guess i should have have read the OP better. heh. i didn't know smokingliscious didn't sell apple. i knew they didn't sell pecan.
