Smoker for someone that doesn’t want to use coal or spend $1,000?

How did you get that controller on it? I think I may be jealous :D
It fits up underneath the hopper. It's pure DIY based around a Raspberry Pi. I printed the cases, etc. It connects between the OEM controller and is switchable so you can use either controller. Projects like these keep my brain busy. Not many electronics DIYers here so not enough interest to warrant a thread of its own...sorry for using your thread, Tim!

You might be surprised. I'm a robotics and controls engineer by day, BBQ hack on the weekends. I understand our forum founder Chris is a software geek. Maybe there could be a hacker subforum?

No problem Ed, the electronic aspect of the stuff holds no interest for me. I see lots of people getting wired in to phone apps so they can make adjustments from wherever they are.I hate the cell phone, I smoke and grill so I don’t have to deal with anything electronic but, that’s just me.

Ok, I'll ask Chris. I'm not really a good thread starter anyway. There is an ongoing discussion on the PiFire Discord channel if anyone would like to join. Here's a couple of other resources:

I tried looking at that stuff last night. Over my head. Looking forward to you doing a write up for us dweebs who aren't real tech savvy

This is the prime reason I do not have any interest in the digital world of all these things. My life is pretty basic most of the time and I like it that way.

I agree, Tim, I hate cell phones too. I buy my own phone(s) and pre-pay for cell service by the minute, but they can make life easier (for instance, when you have a flat tire, you can call AAA to come out to change it for you!)

But you don't have to use a cell phone to interact with the controller...I found out about this last night via Discord and you know I'm going to have to have one...it's just too cute! Octoprint is a free program that runs on a Raspberry Pi (a single board computer) and the RPi monitors my 3D printer. I can slip one of these in my pocket to monitor the printer from anywhere in the house. Some of my prints (like the control box I pictured earlier) take a day and a half to print and I like to keep a relatively close eye on the printer. There is a discussion to adapt this to the PiFire pellet grill controller.

I have no idea what you are talking about Ed. Frankly after the paragraph about calling AAA I am in the dark and like it that way.
the recipient of the pellet pooper will have to deal with all that stuff on her own. ”Here you go…You get to figure it out!”
once it’s set up I’m out!

I doubt it, she will have to learn this thing on her own. I am just not that interested in learning another piece of equipment.

Ok, I took this over to the Automatic Temp Control Forum. Thanks for your patience, Tim!
