I am smoking 2 butts and a brisket tonight and i cant decide what type of wood to use. I normally use Mesquite for the brisket and apple for butt. But this will the first for me to do both at same time. What do you fellow smokers recommend?

If it was me I'd use pecan, it works well on both pork and beef. If I was limited to just apple or mesquite I'd go with the apple.

Too late to be any help, but for long smokes, I like the long-lasting smoke I get from hickory and oak. A combo of the two is really good for butt/brisket cooks, but straight hickory is ok, as well. I usually use shaggy bark hickory though, which isn't as strong as some others from what I hear.

thanks for the help I have plenty of all the common woods. I was thinking mixing 3:1 hickoty to mesquite but i forgot i had some red oak. I have yet to use it im not sure if its dry enough yet. I cut it into chunks in august.
