Smoke Wood in Orlando?

Well, I'm having a hard time finding wood in Orlando and I badly want to do my first smoke this weekend. I can find Hickory or Mesquite chunks easily, but no Oak (or Apple etc..). I don't want to use Mesquite at all and from my understanding I don't want to use just Hickory as it's so strong. I'm planning to do a brisket...only about 7 lbs, so it'll be a short smoke. I mention that because it seems that the time of smoke would make a difference.

Any advice on use of hickory or places in Orlando would be much appreciated.

Ian, i find hickory a good wood to smoke with. Since it is your first smoke I would recommend you lighten up on the amount used. As an aside, I also like to occasionally add in mesquite to my smokes for a flavor variation. Two pieces of hickory and one of mesquite would make for a great brisket. If you are judicious in the amount of wood used it is hard to over smoke a piece of meat. Good luck...

Ian,

It takes a little effort in O'town to get good Q supplies, but your in luck. If you can't get there give the hickory a go. I for one like it with beef smokes.

Good luck!

For those in Orlando, there is a place called Ultimate Cooker on Fairbanks right next to I-4 (technically it's Winter Park there). They have a small amount of smoke wood chunks and chips. They were low on stock, I think that's the norm, but it can help in a pinch.

I picked up some Apple and Cherry while I was there. I think a combo of the Apple and Hickory will make for a good first go.

Thanks for the advice Bill & Gary.

I got a load of split oak for the fireplace and used the chainsaw to cut up a bucket of chunks but also use hickory chunks from walmart at $5/bg. One other place in orlando that offers a very good selection of weber and grill related stuff is the Hardware store in Winter Park off fairbanks. I believe its called Mitchells hardware. Been around a very long time.

Alternatively, there is always eBay. There is a guy out of VA who gives good deals on great wood. It turned out to be only $2-3 for 20 lb of apple/maple than the local place that is clear across town....so as long as you plan ahead, this is now my only way.
