Smaller charcoal rings

Anyone ever play around with using say a charcoal ring for a 18” in a 22” WSM?

I have been thinking of making some smaller rings for my 22” to be used for shorter cooks, I think it works better when it’s all held tight together.

Was also thinking of just using a charcoal chimney

Yep.
I have both ( 18 &22) and a custom ( dumpster find) smaller ring for the 22 but just never used it.
I just use less charcoal.

Simply use less, don’t overthink most of this stuff

I use a 18 ring all the time on my 22.

If shorter I’d bet it would work for chicken wings. Try it soon.
