I've finally run out of rancher, not much opportunity to find good lump in our area, so I've gone back to kingsford. I've had about 10 smokes and 10 grills on the new stuff. I know a lot of us initially didn't like the new kingsford but I am finding some advantages:
- price: very well priced locally
- start time: I've noticed, true to their claims, that new formula starts much quicker and more reliably in my chimney. It does take some watching because if you let the top of the briquettes ignite, the ones on the bottom will have burned too much. So now I dump the charcoal when the flame is about halfway through chimney.
- Modified Minion Method: With the new briquettes starting so quickly, I've tried dumping a fully lit chimney into the charcoal ring. and leaving the top off the cooker for 3-4 minutes. The stuff burns so quickly that I'm at target temp.
The only disadvantage that I can see is burn time. I've been getting 12-13 hours with a full ring and I used to get another 2-3 hours.
