Should I Season My Weber Grill Before Using For the First Time?

Hi, friends,

I recently bought a new Weber Kettle Grill Original, and I was wondering: do I need to season the grill before using it for the first time??

I read something about it on the internet, but I am really confused about it.

Should I season it or not?
If so, how do I do it?
Should I grease with oil the outside of the grill as well as the inside?
What is the purpose of seasoning the grill, after all?

When grills or smokers are made out of raw steel, the metal is usually coated with a machine grade oil.
Seasoning follows a 2 stage process. First you make a sacrificial fire to burn off the oils, then you do a series of brushing the inside with food grade oil similar to seasoning a cast iron skillet.
Weber grills and smokers have a porcelain enamel inside and nickel plated grates, so all you really need to do is wash the cooking grate in mild detergent and start cooking.

Give it a wash down with soap and water, let it dry. Then burn a chimney full of charcoal to burn off the oils from the factory.
