Settling in for the night

Putting a 8 and some change butt down for the night and ran into an issue with my maverick. Pit temp is reading about 50° higher than it actually is as verified with dome temp, pitmaster thermostat, and conventional mechanical thermometer. Checked all probes after last cook just to verify continuity all read within 4° degrees. Anyone got any thoughts?

Where is the probe located? Might want to move it in more. I've found that sometimes the probe will read high if it is placed too close to the edge of the grate especially early on in the cook. I'm assuming it has something to do with the convection currents. Of course it could be the probe itself. Have you tested it for accuracy? But in the bigger scheme of things I wouldn't worry about it. IMO it is all relative and doesn't have to be exact.

Don, first let me say GO DAWGS! Second both probes ( iq and mav) are right beside each other and I checked them with boiling water. When I did the check they were all within a few degrees. GO DAWGS!

Pork butt is very forgiving. Cook till done and take a guess at which therm is accurate. OR, remove the Maverick and retest. I have 2 Mavericks and at times they will read different in the cooker, side by side. Testing later they are the same. It is a Vortex thing! Remember, in the old days, and probably many places today, many Q'ers don't own or use therms, other than their hands.
Happy BBQ.
