Scratches?

I fired up my smoker today for my first cook. About 2 hours into it as I was checking the temperature, I noticed a few small scratches to the right of the access door (near the bottom, on the right side of the door).

I don't really know if I caused the scratches, I'm not sure how I could, as I only took the door off once and don't remember slamming it hitting the outside of the midsection, but of course, I don't have a perfect memory. Nor did I inspect every inch of the WSM when I unboxed it.

I'm not sure if this is a big deal or not, but I really don't want it to rust (part of the reason I got the WSM was their long lifespan).

Should I do anything to protect the midsection from scratches? And once I find a scratch, what should I do?

Thanks,
Scott

Unless the scratch is through the porcelain don't worry. If through to the still , wipe with oil & let season.

When your cook is done, close all the vents and wipe that area with a high smoke oil...peanut is best, or canola, or anything you have.
Just pour some on a paper towel and wipe that area down. You want a light coat.
Do this for the next few cooks, and that area will be as seasoned as a CI pan.
