Seriously though, Just knock off the rust and keep on cookin. As long as the flavorizer bars are still mostly intact without large holes and the edges are relatively still in decent shape, then they are fine. Just clean off the loose rust and gunk and you are good to go. If you have to replace them, consider some 16 gauge stainless steel ones. They will last much longer than the porcelain coated steel ones.

Just scrap the bars off and keep on grilling until they fail the "see thru" test. If you can see holes when you hold them up to light, time to replace them. If not, they still are protecting your burners.
