Royal Oak MIA

Generally speaking, what stores sell Royal Oak? I've been dying to try some but the only place I've ever seen it for sale was at Mills Fleet Farm in St. Cloud, MN. Needless to say I don't plan on bringing charcoal home with me in my carry-on anytime soon.

In San Diego I've checked two Wal-Marts, Ace, BBQs Galore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Around here the only place that carries it (that I've found) is WalMart...and that's "seasonal". Apparently Spring isn't in season because they don't have it yet. I'm told that the store has no control over when it comes in or not. It's a "distribution's deal". Keep checking. I'd say WalMart is your best chance.

Luckily for me Lowe's has Stubbs briquettes year round.

Don't give up on Royal Oak. They make several store & off brands under different labels.

You may be able to contact the company & see if they package their product for a local store. I buy Best Choice lump from a locally owned grocery that is made by Royal Oak. It is distributed by Associated Wholesale Grocers(AWG). Best Choice Lump is usually around $6-7 for a 10 lb. bag. Not too bad.

The local store clerks give me a funny look when I come in and buy all 8 bags at a time.

It's worth a little investigating to find what you like to cook with.

I agree with Don. The Walmart usually has it around here. Be careful when you buy it wherever; make sure it's the American made stuff. RO is made in S. America and other places as well. The quality on those doesn't seem to compare, imho.

Our local WM either never has RO or has so little it sells out in a day. But other WMs I've been to seem to have plenty. Things that make you go hmm.

Military vets might check the nearest base. I'm lucky here...The Ft Bliss commissary carries Royal Oak year round.

If you have a "Do It Best" hardware store near you, they can carry it or get it. You can order online and have it shipped to store for free. Go to Do It Best website and see if there is a store near you.

Check your local big box builder's supply stores as well. I get Royal Oak Steakhouse at Menards. (Chicago 'burbs.)

Ask your local Ace dealer if he can get it from the retail support center. It's listed as an available product.

I'm in the middle of a 15 mile circle that has 3 Walmart Supercenters. Only one has it RO all the time... the others are hit or miss.

Everyone and their mother sells Cowboy lump. It's more common than Kingsford. It's crazy.

Thanks for the feedback guys. My wal-marts here only have blue K and some generic charcoal that I can't even recall the name of. Possibly a store brand.

I'll check k-mart, and maybe have a friend or my lovely mother take me on base to see if the commisary has it.

Thanks

Howdy hi Tim,

If you don't find Royal Oak briquettes, it might not be a tragedy.

I've used hundreds of bags of Kingsford and six bags of Royal Oak briquettes.

Larry brought up the subject and I gave my opinion here.

It has had me wondering if Larry and I got bad samplings of the Royal Oak briquettes or what. However, I have not been curious enough to purchase any more RO.

YMMV!

I've used RO lump briquetts before. Compared to regular Kingsford I think I was able to get some higher temps (did a big steak cook) but I didn't think the ash was any different, nor did I think the flavor was superior to anything else. I'm a regular user of regular RO lump in my smoker. I've used everything in that and have never noticed a difference worth noting.
