Royal Oak Lump

Ive had my smoker for a couple of months now. Ive smoked 6 or 8 times using Kingsford blue bag. Last time I used Kinsford Comp and loved it. I want to try lump, but have only seen RO lump... anyone have any luck with it? Is there a better brand that is readily available?

Joe,

I can personally vouch for Royal Oak: (at least if it's the US-made stuff in the Red bag, or the Green "Steakhouse" stuff).

Some other good lump and all hardwood charcoal are available regionally. If we know about where you are located, others in your area could chime-in is well.

I use Royal Oak when my WalMart stocks it. I like it just fine. Not nearly as much spark and crackle as the Lazarri lump I have used.

Tim, that is a great resource, exactly what I was looking for! Ron, I live in south east Georgia, Statesboro. I saw the royal oak in Walmart. Didnt see any at Lowes. I think Im going to pick up a bag and try the RO this weekend on some overnight butts. Thanks guys.

Big fan of RO lump. I use it pretty much exclusively in my kettles, not as much on long smokes though. I like the consistency of K when it comes to the WSM, but nothing like the flavor and heat of lump for grilling or high heat smoking. I started out using lump with a bag of Cowboy, and holy cow, never seen a spark shower like that! The RO is far superior.

steve are you using the mesquite or the oak lump? while the mesquite does have some sparks i never have any issues with sparking while using the oak

I've had sparks with the RO red bag. It's one of the ones available to me and I will continue to buy it because of that factor.

I'm in the middle of a bag of "Wicked Good, Weekend Warrior" lump and I got some sparks with that too so you can get a bum here or there with any of them.

I have only used the Mesquite Lazarri lump-I have never seen the Oak. I wouldn't mind trying it though.

I use RO Steakhouse lump for my hot cooks on the grill. It works very well for steak and chicken. I have not tried it in my smoker. For that, I want a longer burning fuel, so I use briquettes. For me, lump burns out too quickly for my taste.

Thanks for continuing to comment, this is good news... didnt realize lump burned that much quicker. I may stick to K comp for this weekends smoke, cooking one for me and for a friend, may not be the best time to experiment.
