Royal Oak Lump Charcoal - has anyone read the bag?

I bought my first bag of RO lump at Home Depot, at $12.96 -$1.30 for being DAV it is sort of pricey. I opened it and was pleased with the size of the coals, not too small not too big, unlike the Wicked Good I got 2 weeks ago - huge chunks.

anyhow - has anyone read the back of the bag?

Step one is to soak it with LIGHTER FLUID!!!!

isn't that an oxymoron, as you use lump to avoid any bad tastes! :wsm:

I think so, but a lot of people swear if you let it burn off there is no odor or taste. I don't buy that but lots do.

Until I was persuaded not to by forum members, I used to start all of my fires with lighter fluid. I never had an issue with fluid flavor or smells in my food. I haven't used fluid in months now. And, I'm happy with the results I get and using wax cubes with the chimney. So, I guess I'm indifferent on the idea. I might try it again, just to see if I can tell the difference. I think all of the fluid always burned off long before my food hits the grate.

I get my RO lump from Menard's and it's the green bag. It shows two different ways of lighting, #1 is using twisted sheets of newspaper and #2 is using lighter fluid. RO makes and sells lighter fluid so it seems they are pushing it here.

No doubt, Tim. It's always about the money and pushing product.

I have no experience lighting lump with lighter fluid, but I suspect it burns off quicker due to the porous nature of briquettes. However, I wouldn't take a chance by cooking too early with it, so it would be about as wasteful as waiting to dump a chimney of lump after it was fully in flames.

I haven't used lighter fluid in years,it's so easy to use a chimney that fluid is not needed.
