Royal Oak Lump Briquettes

My local shop rite had some bags of RO all natural, 100% hardwood lump briquettes. Anyone ever use these? I picked an a bag to test out. I really like their regular red bag lump but I find briquettes burn more consistently.

I have a large bag of these as well, let me know how its goes, I want to use them for some pork butts - I absolutely hate the smell/taste of regular K after switching to lump.... but I'm scared to use lump for and over nighter that I have coming up...

I used this today for a baby back rib cook. Passing 4 hours now holding steady at 240 lid. I use a foiled clay pot instead of water. I used 1 full chimney of unlit and about 1/4 of a chimney lit on top. 1 vent fully closed the other 2 maybe 10% open. It has performed quite well. No foul odor on startup and no black smoke. Very impressed with it. Hope I can find some more.

If I loaded the chamber to the top I bet I'd get 10-12 hours easy. The consistency reminds me of blue bag K.

Doitbest.com carriers it, check the site and see if you have to ship-to-store location near you. This where I got mine.

Good tip. There's a hardware store 1 mile from me that will work with doitbest.com

However, my bag of RO looks different than the one pictured on the website

Is this the a new kind or just a different package?

I'm betting its just different packaging, as the one on doitbest.com is for a 40 lb. bag and says "Food Service" Not for Resale. I attribute the packaging to the size and the intended clientèle.

Here is a link to a thread regarding this very subject

I have ordered and received the 40 lb. bag from doitbest.com and it does indeed say "100% Natural Hardwood"

I just stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up 3 bags of their hardwood briquettes - made by Rancher and according to reviews from the people here, its good stuff as well.

So it's not all natural apparently yet it says 100% natural hardwood on the bag. Does that mean it uses some nasty binder like borax (like K)? I did not notice any nasty odors during startup or during the cook.

I just finished a 10 hour cook (pork butt) using this charcoal and I am in awe. I filled the ring to the tippy top and after 10 hours I must have almost half of it still in there. I have never seen anything burn more efficiently.

My WSM held 235 (give or take 5 degrees) for about 8 straight hours with no vent adjustments. I had one vent closed, one about 5% open and the other about 25% open. All I can say is wow.

The only place I can find it as at my local Shop Rite. It's $8.49 for a 10lb bag. Not too bad I suppose. Maybe I'll try that doitbest.com web site someone suggested. I am still shaking my head. Incredible. I bet I could have gone 20+ hours.

I'm going to try these on my next smoke, I do have a bag, but decided at to use Trader Joe's (Rancher) briquettes for my butts.

I'm at 6 hours holding at 331, has not moved a single degree - checked my readings - everythings working a-ok.

So I went to startup today's smoke and found that I had almost 2 full chimney's left over from yesterday's 10 hour cook. I cleaned out all the small pieces and dumped the ash. Lit about 10-15 coals in a chimney. I got another 6+ hours.

I was almost laughing when I checked the cooker long after the ribs came off. It was still holding 240 just like it did all day. Truly an amazing product. I am sold.
