Royal Oak Lump and my Confusion

So I finally got some good news on the charcoal front. Went to the city today and stopped in at home depot, they're carrying charcoal now. It's Royal Oak Briquettes, I pass. Off to Canadian Tire and they are carrying K, pass again. So now to Wal Mart. They are carrying Royal Oak lump $7.83 for a 10 pound bag. Now I know this is high for the US but this is incredible to even find lump out here, first time I had seen it actually, usually I just drive to Seattle and stock up.

So anyways I but 10 bags of the stuff but instead of the normal red bag, the bag is blue. Now I know from reading on Naked Whiz before that a couple types of Royal Oak are made in South America and one is made in the USA. These Blue bags don't give any indication of where they are made or anything else. Has anyone else seen or tried them. What's going on!

Hi Clark, in Ontario, Canadian Tire is having a sale in mid June on RO Lump. It will be on sale for ~10.99 or 11.99 for the 8KG bag. I help organize a BBQ on Canada Day for roughly 1000 people, so I start to look and ask for this sale every year.

Hi Clark, the RO briquettes are my everyday fuel. $8/18lbs Candian Tire/Home Depot. I've used the RO blue bag lump, no complaints.

The RO blue bag I used threw a lot of nasty smoke lighting up. It was fine for Minion method but I wouldn't recommend throwing handfuls of unlit in the smoker and leaving your door propped/off.

Thanks for the heads up on the sale Dave. I will definately be hitting that one up. I really have to stock up over the summer, In late August we can't buy any charcoal anymore, until mid May.

I'll also be heading to Seattle on the weekend and filling up the old Aveo with Royal Oak it usually goes for about $4.50 for 10 pounds out there so pretty decent.

Shawn thanks for the response. I'mk glad to hear the blue bag isn't to bad, I was a little concerned with Royal Oak making so many different types. YOu also mentioned that you use their briquettes. This is the first time I ran across them on the weekend. I normally just use lump but I take it you think pretty highly of them. Worth picking up a bag?

Thanks all

yeah, I grab 10 bags in late summer/early fall to get through the winter as well.

The RO briqs are fine. I used some Kingsford last year when I hit a really good sale and it didn't seem to last any longer than the RO. I'd certainly recommend picking up a couple of bags to see what you think.

I can get Maple Leaf lump locally at Barbeques Galore, the Rona near me was selling it a couple of years ago. If you can find it you should try some. When it's lighting it smells so good you want to eat it.

If I see it on sale this year I'll let you know, maybe I can ship you some.

My local Walmart carried RO USA made Lump until this month. They now have NOTHING but different kinds of briquettes. I had been buying the RO lump there for about three years!

I have to find another local source for some decent lump now!

That would be sweet if you could send me down some Maple Leaf. Just shoot me off an email if it goes on sale. My brother was going to bring me some down last summer but it fell through. Sucked! I've only heard great things about it though. I'll keep looking for it here to. I could probably track it down in vancouver but don't get ther ever really. On the Island there is next to nothing available.

Thanks!

Clark, try your local Home Hardware Store. In Ontario it comes around $14 for an 8kg bag for the Maple Leaf.

Same here. Fortunately, I picked up two of the last bags last time I saw it. They never restocked after that. Anybody know if this is a temporary thing, or if some or all Walmarts have just stopped stocking it because it wasn't selling?

Try living 20 minutes from Royal Oak headquarters. No Lowes, no Home Depots, and no Wal-Marts around me carry the stuff. The only thing I can find is Cowboy. I have to go to Barbecues Galore and pay $20 for a 20 lb bag of Big Green Egg lump to get Royal Oak.

Hi Dave thanks for the heads up on Home Hardware. I calle d abunch of them today and they all carry K but was definately worth a try!

Interesting to hear that Wal Mart isn't carrying Royal Oak in some US States now and they finally did start selling it here. Go figure.

Seems to differ by store. The Wal Mart near my house used to carry RO lump now they only carry Nature's Grilling South/Central american product I posted about.

dan, orchard supply carries lazzari lump and smart and final carries big bags of good restaurant style lump that is also priced right.

Thanks for the link Shaun, I somehow missed that one. I did see this at Wal Mart as well but skipped on it, was a little more expensive than the Royal Oak and the bags were a lot smaller (I didn't get the exact size but they were very small), I'll have to pick one up next time for grilling.

Hey Clark, Ask if they can special order it in for you. The warehouse/ distribution centre does have it in stock. If I want it, I have the local store order it in for me(Seems that the average Joe just likes to use briquettes, and doesn't know what they are missing)
