These are shaded pole motors with a very low starting torque that is multiplied about 60x through mechanical gearing. Here's a recent discussion:
So I picked up some rotisserie stuff yesterday from FB. I got a brand new 9890 for $25. It also had an extra 3rd party spit and motor. I got it home and plugged it in and the motor made a slight wining sound but did not turn. I decided to open it up and I found that the motor was never used but the original grease had solidified into a rock binding the gears. Check picture. With a lot of cleaning and some silicone spray it now works. It looks really good on my Genesis 5.

I pretty much use that technique at all the forums a frequent. I have found the forum native search function to not perform as well.

I had one that stopped working, I believe it was a Weber. Totally my fault because I put too much weight on it. I was able to take it apart and I saw that one of the gears jumped off the other gear. So I slipped it back into place and it worked for a while, but then it jumped off again. I kept fixing it but it just got worse and worse so that it became unusable. In the end I threw it away and bought this one.

The switch on mine went wonky and unit was replaced under warranty with zero hassle.
