Last weekend I had some trouble with my RO lump burning out more quickly then I expected. (First time using lump) It was a brisket cook, 15lbs. This weekend I did 2 butts, 10lbs.
I packed the ring as well as I could and as high as I could as I did the first time. The only thing I changed was how I did the minion start. The first time I covered the bottom of the chiminey with lump and dumped on top for my minion light.
This time I used 7 or 8 Kingsford briquets for the light. The idea being that lump burns so much hotter then briquets. I closely monitored my smoker at 1-2 hour increments throughout the night. I was expecting to have to add fuel at some point but every time I lifted the cooking section to get a good look at my fuel it had barely changed from the last time I looked.
I got a burn that would have probably rivialed my longest K cooks, if I kept adding food that is. The butts were done in about 14 hours and I would say that a third of the lump was still black and unburnt. Very happy with the results.
The pork was great too, I used a bastardized metamorphesis rub and tried the Carolina white sauce for the first time. Yummy!
