Question - help please

First off, Happy Fathers Day!
Second, what is the thing called in the photo? I'm guessing defuser, but I can't find a parts list anywhere
Lastly, can I run my SmokeFire without it installed? I want to cook my Tri Tip indirect until 115 and then sear it to finish

Any hele is greatly appreciated

That's called the "welded abatement" and I've never run without it. Everyone I see searing have it in place. Put you meat on the right side of it, temp 500 or higher and you'll get a sear.
 
Thanks Lew. Just for giggles, I fired the grill up to 350 without the welded abatement and without the center flavor bar. What I found out is that a ton of ash blows around the BBQ and that it would be very likely that it'll end up on my cook
