Question for WSM owners

After several cooks on my WSM and struggling with keeping the temps down I came to the conclusion that I had an air leak. I measured both the midsection and the charcoal bowl and determined that the midsection was out or round. A call to the Weber Customer Service and a week later I had a brand new midsection.

While placing it on the bowl I discovered it rocked back and forth. I placed it bottom side down on my garage floor and I can see that it is not truly flat. I tested the old mid-piece only to discover it rocked back and forth also. I measured the new middle section and it seams to be in round. Is this normal for it to be not truly flat and to rock a bit?

Mine too, and I rotate mine too.

Check for air leaks be closing ALL of the vents and then put a lit candle on one of the crates. Leave it for a short time and then check to see if the flame went out. If you find that after an extended amount of time that the candle didn't go out you probably have an air leak.

I did the same check with mine when I was putting it together. I then realized it's ok for the very bottom to have gaps. That section doesn't form the seal to the charcoal bowl. It's the lip just above it that provides the seal. Mine also rocked back and forth a little. So I took some aluminum tape and added to the bottom of the ridge of the cooking section in the areas that were gapped. Took a few tries but finally got it rock steady. Did the same thing to the lid. She's good and tight now.

Good to hear I am not alone. Okay so a little rocking is normal. I will take your advice and move it around until I find that spot where it likes to hold steady. The candle idea sound great too. I will put it to the test.
Thanks everyone.
