Question for combo briquette/lump users

I know most of us here have settled on a preference when it comes to fuel for our WSM. Some like briquettes while others go with lump. But I know there a few that go with a combination of the two when using the Minion method. My question is to those folks. What's your setup? Do you go with lit briquettes on a bed of unlit lump or the other way around? Or maybe some other configuration. I'm curious because I use Stubbs briquettes and Royal Oak lump and I'm thinking about going with a combination of the two for my low and slow cooks. I was going to go with the lit Stubbs on the unlit Royal Oak - but I wanted to get a second or third opinion. Comment away.

By the way, I posted this yesterday and its in the trading post section but...Stubbs briquettes are on sale a Lowes right now - $5 for the 15 lb. bag. Get it while the gettin' is good.

Russ, I've mixed fuels, and didn't care for it. The ring seemed more apt to get an uneven burn.

However, I've done a layer of Stubbs on the bottom, and all lump on top of that a few times. This is a pretty good set-up for a HH rib or turkey cook, since you don't need to use a second grate to keep the smaller pieces of lump from fallng through. Also, once it burns down to the Stubbs, those coals will last longer.

When it comes to the advantage of lump for HH though, I'm not so sure that Stubb's doesn't give me just as hot a fire. I'm convinced that lump doesn't give me any more flavor, so why not just pour the Stubb's in the ring? The only real advantage I see to the lump is in grilling when you're basting the meat often, like Roadside Chicken and such. You don't want any charcoal binders when you're grilling like that.

I have also done that. The guy that turned me on to Stubbs told me thats how he does it so I tried it. It worked out okay. I just wanted to see how other people do it. I did do lit Stubbs on top of unlit lump once but there were other factors involved that made that cook inconclusive. I would need to try it at least once more to see if I really like it. So for now just trying to get some other opinions.

I haven't tried the Stubbs yet(just nabbed 8 bags this am, so thanks for the heads-up!)
I do use RO lump and RO briqs, together and separately, depends on whats on sale.
When I do mix its lit briqs over unlit lump, though I have reversed it depending on what's left in my stash, and I didn't notice any difference.
I don't do allot of low n slow >225°< so you might have to experiment with that.
Good luck!

Tim
