Question about Gasket Kit for WSM.

In follow up to a recent thread I just learned about the gasket kits that are available for my 22.5. I think this is a great idea and may solve my issues with smoke escaping and heat control. I was not aware of these kits previously.

Here is an example I found from asking Dr. Google: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00CI6WFCU/tvwb-20

Has anybody used this kit before or another kit that you would recommend? I have never upgraded to the Cajun Bandit door because the cost of shipping (to me) seems exorbitant and pushes the door to and "unnecessary" expense level. But that's just my $0.02.

Thoughts?

Thanks and keep smoking! :wsm22:

That is the kit that I used. I would start with re-forming the door so it sits tighter, and then add the gasket to it.

I would then test to see how the WSM works. I gasketed the door, the lid and the middle to bottom sections. The middle to bottom isn't needed and makes re-asembly kind of a PITA. The lid may have been overkill too, but I tend to get lazy and run my probes out from under the lid so it may help with that.

I put that gasket kit on mine over the winter. It works really well for me. I would definitely have someone help you to put it on cause it is kind of a pain. I didn't put the gasket on the base of mine because I always have a good seal there. If I had it to do over I would not fire my WSM up for a day or two because I fired mine up that night and my gasket moved a little in a place or two. The gasket for under the lid fits perfect.
Hope this helps!!!

Mine was an eBay purchase from Island Outdoor, LLC. I would recommend applying the seal to the door since it's pliable, but not to the bottom of the center section. I installed mine to the door opening. I am not pleased because the arch at the top "peeks" out above the door. IMO, it looks sloppy. Overall, I am glad I did it.

Not to try to dissuade anyone from an improvement on their WSM, but-t-t, I have both a 14.5" and a 18.5" WSM and I have not had any problems with using mine almost "as issued". The only improvements I have done is to cut a slot for my Maverick probes in the top of the middle section. I MUCH prefer the slot as opposed to the silicone grommet for the probe wires. It is much easier to use.

Otherwise, I just use my WSM's as they come. I am a BIG fan of the WSM and use mine quite often.

I foil the water pan and use it dry just as a deflector. I run my Boston Butts and ribs at 275 degrees.

Just a thought or two...

The reason I got the gasket kit is because I also use the BBQ DigiQ DX. I figured the gasket would aid the DigiQ by maintaining an even vacuum-like state.

I foil my pan and fill it half way with water. It's a convenient place to move the ashes to when done. I fold the foil into a neat little "mud pillow" and slide it into the empty charcoal bag for the next trash day. Then I clean out the pan and re-foil it for next time.
